Memorial website in the memory of your loved one
This memorial website was created in the memory of our loved one, Cassandra Umbach.  Cassandra O'Connell was born  in Canada on April 19, 1977.  Cassandra has been my best friend for longer than I can remember.  I met Cass at the Ottawa Children's Treatment Centre when we were both very little girls.
Cassandra was born with cerebral palsy, and I got CP in my infancy.  We were blessed with the opportunity to meet each other at OCTC.  One of the most heart-breaking memories I have of Cassandra is of the times she told me I was the only one who would play with her back then.  I know you weren't just saying that Cass, but it still boggles my mind how I could have been the only one who would play with such an amazing person.  I think Cassandra is great, she is my inspiration.  For much of our lives, I lived with my parents in North Gower and Cassandra lived in Ottawa.  I'm 27 now and still very shy a lot of the time, and still without a driver's licence, so I have been dependent on my parents for socializing and transportation most of my life.  Consequently, spending time with my friends has always been a challenge.  Cassandra was always very cheerful and outgoing - I've always admired that about her.  She has given me something to strive for - and the way that she always believed in me gave me something to believe in (friendship and myself).  I am very grateful for every moment Cassandra and I did spend together.  I have very special memories of our time spent together at the Ottawa Rotary Home and Merrywood Camp and everywhere else our paths crossed.   Cassandra passed away suddenly on Monday, December 13, 2004 at the age of 27, having touched many people's lives.  We will love and remember her forever.

Cassandra was chosen as the "Tammy" for the Easter Seal Society.  In this role, she represented the abilities, determination, and dreams of children and youth with physical disabilities (of the Ottawa-Carleton Region? ...or was it provincial?).

Personal Story: The right to live in a safe and happy home.

by Cassandra Umbach, Ottawa, Ontario

Hi, my name is Cassandra Umbach. I'm 18 years old and I live in Ottawa. Because I came from an abusive foster home to a safe adoptive family, I feel that every young person, regardless of whether or not they have a disability, should have a safe home. I was born with cerebral palsy.

I was in my foster home for about five years, from the age of five until the age of ten. During that time, I remember going to school and wondering why everyone else was looking forward to going home, when I dreaded going home and would have preferred to stay at school.

When I went to school I couldn't focus on my work because I was so distraught. When I was ten years old, I was adopted by the Umbachs into a safe and happy home and I remember feeling so angry that I even had to go through what I did, and that there were other children still suffering and nobody was doing anything about it. So then I decided to do something about it. With the help of my new adoptive parents, we got in touch with the Children's Aid Society of Ontario and tried to help out.

Since then, I'm an honour role student and I do a lot of different activities, like skiing, and right now I'm trying to get into the vocal programme at my high school.

Anybody should be able to live in a safe home, and if it means telling people about the problem, you'll learn that there are people out there who will listen, and who can give you the help you need.
